Carol Jean Weiland

HAMILTON LAKES - Carol Jean Weiland of Hamilton Lakes died Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2015, at home with family by her side, after a long illness. She was 79 years old. Jean was born Feb. 14, 1936 to Albert and Margaret (Brosio) Erickson of Iron Mountain. She was a 1953 graduate of Kingsford High School. She met her husband Robert Weiland in Chicago, and after marriage they lived in the Illinois towns of Urbana, Evanston, and Arlington Heights with their young and growing family. In 1973, they moved to Hamilton Lakes, and their children all attended Norway-Vulcan Area Schools. Jean was beloved by her family and friends. She enjoyed cross-country skiing and long walks, loved to cook, and was an avid reader. Jean traveled frequently to see her children, and visited Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, California, Florida, Arizona, and Maryland, among other places. She also frequently attended folk music festivals in the U.P. and Wisconsin and loved live theatre as well. Pets were welcome in her home and could always count on some table scraps to help the kibble go down. Jean was an excellent cross-word puzzle solver and a quiet force at Scrabble, always claiming to get lucky when she won. Vegetable and flower gardens were well-maintained under her care. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Robert Weiland of Hamilton Lakes; sister, Dianne Rommel (Gerald Christesen) of Kingsford; children, Theresa Weiland (Steve Csik) of Boise, Idaho, Ed Weiland (Laurel Haas) of Bend, Ore., Sandy Weiland (Tom Ball) of Hamilton Lakes, Bob Weiland (Mary Barba) of Portland, Ore., Meg (Darren) Taff of Norway, and Jim (Terri) Weiland of Santa Clarita, Calif.; grandchildren, Brady (Cassandra) Gustafson, Albert (Mami) Weiland, Casey (Chris) Gobert, Jana (Matthew) Light, Tony (Stephanie) Bonneau, Nikki Younk (Nick Gifford), Alyssa Younk (Erik Hudson), Keely Weiland, Jake Bonneau, Darrell Younk III, Natasha Taff, Austin Taff (Candace Peterson), Ilona Csik, Gregory Weiland, and Matthew Weiland; great grandchildren Bobby, Daniel, Vincent, Victoria, Fiona, Gabriel, Harvey, Clark, Annika and Pearl; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by a brother, David Erickson. At Jean's request, there will be no service in her honor. In lieu of flowers and in her honor, the family requests that you be kind, put others before yourself, take what you need and not more, cook a meal for someone you love, have a cup of tea, walk slowly, laugh and play games, and make time to enjoy life.
