Clarence DeBakker

NORWAY- Clarence James DeBakker age 90 of Norway, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 22, 2023 to be with his Lord and Savior, surrounded by his family at Marshfield Medical Center – Dickinson in Iron Mountain, Michigan. He was born on November 17, 1932 in Norway, the son of the late John and Lena (Giuliani) DeBakker. Clarence graduated from Norway High School in 1951. He served his country in the National Guard for three years, where he took several courses in machine tool. Clarence married Lorraine Bolek on February 6, 1954 in St. Mary’s Church in Norway. They had many wonderful times together in the 69 years they were married. Early in their marriage, they lived in Illinois, where Clarence worked at several machine shops, including Illinois Tool Works. They returned to Norway in 1958, after working various jobs, Clarence started working in his trade at Lake Shore Engineering. He worked for Lake Shore for 25 years as a machinist. When he was 56, he went full time into his recycling business of metals and cardboard. Clarence loved keeping busy and enjoyed working even after his retirement. He enjoyed many outdoor activities, including hunting, fishing, and trapping. He loved going to his grandchildren’s sporting events and was very proud of them. Clarence was known for his story telling and enjoyed talking with people. He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years Lorraine; children Jean Gustafson, Carol (Dave) Hinds, Stephen (Carla) DeBakker and Sandra Kadletz; grandchildren Christine (Brian) Cowell, Brian (Renee) Gustafson, Michelle (Dave) Gallagher, Alan (Kayla) Hinds and Andrew (Nicole) Hinds; 11 great grandchildren; brother Robert DeBakker; many nieces, nephews and cousins. Clarence was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Donald DeBakker. Family will greet friends on Wednesday, March 29 from 9:30-11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church in Norway. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church with Fr. Marty Flynn, officiating. Interment will follow at the Norway Township Cemetery. Clarence’s family would like to thank the staff at Maryhill Manor of Niagara and Marshfield Medical Center – Dickinson for their exceptional care.
