Rita Mae Reid

FAITHORN- Rita Mae Reid, age 84, died Wednesday, April 22, 2020 at ManorCare in Kingsford, Michigan. Rita was born May 24, 1935 in Nadeau, Michigan to Alphonse and Marie (LaPointe) Poupore. Rita graduated from Stephenson High School in 1953 and the Humbolt Institute in Minneapolis in 1955, with a degree in communications. She married the late Laurence George Reid of Faithorn at St. Bruno’s Catholic Church in Nadeau in 1955 and they lived on their farm in Faithorn until his death in 1981. They raised six children, Constance Reid-Guffey (Scott Guffey) of Faithorn; Kathleen (Gary) Hummel of Waucedah, Susan (Bill) DeVoe of Faithorn, Barbara (Ron) Zeugner of Vulcan, Annette (Peter) Fontana of Faithorn and Clark (Joanne) Reid of Faithorn. Rita loved to spend time with family and friends. She enjoyed cooking, hunting for mushrooms each spring and deer each fall. In addition to being a loving wife and mother, Rita was a true partner working on the family farm. Over the years she worked as a USPS Rural Mail carrier, a realtor, and was Co-owner of New Brier supper club. She was appointed to serve on the Agriculture Commission for the State of Michigan in 1984, representing the Upper Peninsula until retirement in 1994. Rita also served on the Menominee County Parks and Recreation Commission, USDA ASCS County Committee, Faithorn Township Board as a Trustee and on various fund drives for Faithorn Township. She also served on the Rescue Squad. Rita was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for over 50 years, St. Mary’s Altar Society, Menominee and Dickinson County Farm Bureau and many other organizations. Rita is survived by her children; also her siblings, Sylvia Williams of Peoria, AZ; Jeanette (Bill) Wells of DePere, WI; Elinor (Tom) Wells of Powers and Gerald (MaryJo) Poupore of Nadeau; sisters-in-law, Bethel Carlson of Faithorn, Norma Fernhaber of Wauwatosa, WI and Lorraine (Jerry) Kelly of Iron Mountain. Rita and Larry were blessed with 17 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Samuel, George, Jack and Patrick Guffey, Troy and Tiffanie Hummel, Madelyn and Reid DeVoe, Laurence and Jake Zeugner, Maria (Fontana) Rowell, Peter Fontana, Emily (Pryor) Lundberg, Jeremy Pryor, Courtney (Pryor) LeMire, Evan Reid and Elliott Reid, Myah and Sophia Zeugner, Teagan and Remington Hummel, and Soren and Guideon LeMire. Rita was preceded in death by her loving husband, Laurence George Reid, Paternal Grandparents, Peter and Zulema (Perras) Poupore, Maternal Grandparents, Joseph and Anna (Turcotte) Lapointe, Mother-in-law, Grace (Salzeider) Reid , Father-in-law, George W. Reid, Sister-in-law Janice Neimi, Brothers-in-law Douglas Reid, Stanley Carlson, Ralph Fernhauber, Kenneth Sigg, and Great-grandaughter, Camryn LeMire. A private burial will take place at Faithorn Riverside Cemetery. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Friday, August 21 at 2 p.m. at St. Barbara's Church in Vulcan, with Fr. Timothy Ekaitis officiating.
