ALBERT MASTY VULCAN - After a lifetime of work to fulfill the mission of God’s church, Albert (Al) A. Masty, 86, of Vulcan, died on Sunday, December 6, 2009, at Baylor Medical Center in Carrollton, TX. Al was born on January 4, 1923 in Vulcan, son of the late Jacob and Catherine (Konopka) Masty. He graduated from Vulcan High School in 1941 and served in the US Navy from 1943 through 1946. He graduated from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio in 1947 with a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration. Al married Kathleen Girard on August 10, 1946 at St. Barbara’s Catholic Church in Vulcan. She preceded him in death on August 7, 2003. Al began his professional career in Chicago in 1947, working for Carnegie Illinois Steel. He returned to Vulcan in 1949 to assist with his Father in Law’s automobile dealership, the Vulcan Garage. In 1958 he bought Dickinson County Motors in Iron Mountain and operated an American Motors and Jeep dealership until his retirement in 1982. Following retirement Al moved to a role aligned with his life’s passion, working until 1986 as Director of Religious Education at Holy Spirit School. Through the years, Al has participated in and served his Catholic faith community in numerous roles. He touched the lives of numerous youth in his over two decade role as the lay leader of the Christ to Others (COR) retreat program. In addition, he was involved in CANA Retreats, Christian Family Movement, Cursillo, Ministry to shut-ins, Rosary Cennacle, Legion of Mary and small faith community. He served his church as a C.C.D. teacher, Lector, Eucharistic Minister, member of St. Barbara’s Parish Council and Holy Spirit School Board. Al also served on the Vulcan School Board and as treasurer of the Norway-Vulcan Area School Board. He was a charter member of the Vulcan-Norway-Loretto Lions club and belonged to the Rotary and Civic Club. Al is survived by a daughter, Micki (Peter) Bilski of Green Bay, WI; sons Tim (Terry) Masty of Atlanta, GA and Mark (Jonelle) Masty of Flower Mound, TX; eight grandchildren, Shannyn (Joseph) Caldwell, Ryan (Shannon) Cook, Matt (Amy) Bilski, Christi (Jon) Brule, Andy Bilski, Jonathan Masty, Lauren Masty and Rachel Masty; seven great-grandchildren, Alexandra, Liam, Max, Sam, Olivia, Sophie and CeCe; numerous nieces and nephews; and beloved family friends, Marge Johnson and Mary Beth Hodapp. He was preceded in death by a daughter and son-in law, Jacquelyn and Lee Cook, five sisters, Josephine Wiedenbock, Frances Secrist, Sophie Westwater, Rose Misialowski and Advick Misialowski, a brother Michael Masty, and five infant brothers. Family will greet friends on Saturday, December 12 from 10-11 a.m. at St. Barbara Church in Vulcan. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, at 11 a.m. at St. Barbara Church, with Fr. James Roetzer, presiding with Fr. Mark McQuesten and Fr. Joseph Gouin concelebrating. The family request in lieu of flowers memorials may be made in Al’s name to Holy Spirit School in Norway.
