Green Bay, Wis – Curtis D. Oberthaler, 90, of Norway, passed away peacefully at Grancare Nursing Center in Green Bay on Friday, Jan 3rd, 2020 where he had resided since 2018. He was born November 28, 1929 in Norway, MI, son of the late Gerino and Alvina (Wegher) Oberthaler. After graduating from Norway High School and serving his country in the US Navy on the USS Valley Forge, he married the love of his life Joan (Waltz) Oberthaler on May 23, 1953 in Milwaukee, WI. Curt later retired after 30 years working at Northland Associated Grocers. He was an avid Norway Knights booster and Green Bay Packers fan. He and his late wife Joan gave generously of their time to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Jake Menghini Museum, Big brother/Little brothers and hosted a foreign exchange student. Curt was an avid wood worker having crafted numerous items for friends and family. He was also known for his hat collection and duck callings skills which earned him 2 appearances on Buck LaVasseur’s Discovering show. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years Joan (Waltz) Oberthaler and his sisters Grace Baumbach, Betty Machnik & Dorothy Olkowski. Curt is survived by his two brothers Douglas (Grace) Oberthaler of Greendale, WI and James Oberthaler of Wauwatosa, WI; three sons Peter (Diane) Oberthaler of Wichita, KS, John (Sara) Oberthaler of Stevens Point, WI, Joe (Peggy) Oberthaler of Pensacola, FL; daughter Lori (Brett) Mayer of Green Bay, WI; grandchildren Andrew Oberthaler, Katie Oberthaler, Jody (John) Chmay, April Oberthaler, Alex Oberthaler, Claire Oberthaler, Luke Mayer, Eric (Megan) Mayer and Karlee Mayer; honorary son Oliver Thiel, great grand children Stephen Mayer, Gideon Mayer, Sophie Chmay and many nieces and nephews including RoseAnne (Ronald) Aman and Ronda Lucas and special family friends Walt and Diane Bellmore. The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff of Grancare Nursing Center for their care, kindness & compassion while caring for our father. Family will greet friends on Wednesday, January 8 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Memorial Services will be held on Wednesday at 11:30 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church with Rev. Dr. Michael Langlais officiating. Interment will be held at the Norway Township Cemetery in the spring.
