CUNARD- Lawrence B. Olivares age 69 of Cunard, beloved husband, brother, brother-in-law, special uncle and friend, was taken to his heavenly home surrounded by family, dedicated nurses, prayers and tears on Wednesday, February 20, 2019 at Dickinson Co. Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain, MI. He was born on October 24, 1950 in Mount Clemens, the son of the late Ernest and Mary (Brennan) Olivares. The family moved to Canoga Park, CA and later to Michigan, where Escanaba was chosen as their home. After graduating from Escanaba High School in 1968, Larry continued his education at Bay Community College and Northern Michigan University. He went on to Eastern Michigan University graduating in 1973. He then entered Wayne State University Law School in 1973, and received his Juris Doctor degree in 1976. Larry returned to the UP and engaged in the private practice of law in Escanaba from 1976 until 1985, during this time period he married the former Darlene Asplund of Hermansville. In 1985 Larry and Darlene moved to Tennessee, where he accepted a position as staff attorney for the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. In 1987 he accepted a position as legal counsel for the non-partisan Legislative Service Bureau-Legal Division in Lansing. He retired from state service in January 2011. Once again, they moved back to the UP. He became an associate attorney with his brother E. Jay Olivares in Norway, until Jay’s passing. Larry loved music and was a self-taught accomplished musician, with the guitar being his special chosen instrument. He enjoyed playing in bands including Prophets of Doom and North Star. In recent years he enjoyed playing and singing in church Praise Bands. Children enjoyed Larry, during the past four years Larry considered it a privilege to spend time with his great nephew Hunter. There is no doubt he will also be watching over those children yet to come. Larry has many nieces and nephews who although distance was far, they were never far from Uncle Larry’s heart. He was passionately interested in following the politics of the day, he enjoyed traveling, was an avid reader, loved the serenity of country living, his favorite activity however was drinking coffee. He is survived by his wife of 39 years Darlene; brothers Keith (Brenda) Olivares, Mark (Carol) Olivares, John (Amy) Olivares; sister Frannie (Victor) Elbaz; brother-in-law Darrel (Melodie) Asplund; sister-in-law Sheila Olivares; nieces and nephews Hunter, Nathan, Jared, Stephanie, Teaha, Andrea, Justin, Philip, Rachel, Mathew, Catherine, Maria, Devin, Trevor, Paige, Colin and Conor. Come join us for a cup of coffee, when we have a celebration of Larry’s life on Saturday, March 2 at 1 pm (CST) for visitation and 2 p.m. (CST) for a memorial service at the 1st United Methodist Church in Hermansville, the service will be led by the Larsen Family. A luncheon will follow in the fellowship hall afterwards. The committal service will take place at the family’s convenience at Moss Lake Cemetery in Isabella.
