VULCAN- Marie Skog age 91 of Vulcan, died Tuesday, March 29, 2016 at Evergreen Assisted Living in Norway. She was born on May 3, 1924 in Norway, the daughter of the late Emil and Ida (Haferkorn) Johnson. Marie graduated from Vulcan High School in 1942 and completed a twelve month course in business law at Cleary College in Ypsilanti. She was the youngest private secretary ever employed by Chrysler Corporation in Highland Park. She was later offered a scholarship to Michigan State University and after several semesters there, returned home due to her mother’s health. Marie became office manager of the Agricultural Stabilization office in Dickinson County. Marie married Gordon Skog on September 11, 1948 in Norway. He preceded her in death on June 10, 2001. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and served in various ways, such as secretary, treasurer, chairman of the finance committee and on the Church board. She was also active in the Vulcan PTA and was a life member and past Matron of the Norway Chapter #251 Order of the Eastern Stars. Marie was a 41 year cancer survivor and a volunteer for over twenty years for the Cancer Society’s Reach to Recovery Program, A Road to Recovery volunteer driver, and an office volunteer for many years. Marie loved life, loved people and especially loved her family. Marie is survived by her seven children, Allyn (Robert) Travis of Milwaukee, WI, Donna (Harold) Grey of Dallas, PA, Marcia (Mark) Kissinger of Eau Claire, WI, Amy (Roger) Dixon of Hamilton Lakes, Richard (Susan) Skog of Edgerton, WI, David (Judy) Skog of Norway, and Mark (Carol) Skog, of Norway; 17 grandchildren, Sarah Travis, Robert (Michelle) Travis, Cody, Micayla and Taylor Grey, Callie (Mike) Scardina, Aaron, Hope and Kyle Kissinger, Kaitlin, Samuel, Michael, Terry, Scott Skog, Robert (Ashley) Skog, Christopher (Justine) Skog and Daniel (Jessie) Skog; 6 great grandchildren; two sisters-in-law Doris Nelson of Iron Mountain and Fern Simon of Green Bay, WI, a brother-in-law James Skog of Indian River; an uncle Kermit Johnson of Escanaba; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and many special neighbors and friends. She was preceded in death by her brother Lt. Richard C. Johnson and grand daughter-in-law Nicole Skog. Visitation will be held on Friday from 4-7 p.m. at the Ortman Funeral Home in Norway. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Grace United Methodist Church in Norway, with Rev. Irene White officiating. Interment will follow at the Norway Township Cemetery. Memorials may be made in Marie’s name to the Grace United Methodist Church Building Fund, the church of your choice or Bay Cliff Health Camp.
